In-home Gold Coast newborn photography session with Emma | Roshini M Photography

I rang the doorbell just after 9am at Emma's beautiful apartment in Currumbin on the Gold Coast.

There is something so beautiful and at ease about being invited into someone's home. It often makes a newborn photo session much simpler because, as we know, babies are so unpredictable with their moods, poops and when they require boob or sleep. In a home environment, mum has everything she needs on hand through the photo session and can relax in her home environment.

Emma and I chatted for a while, connected, and let Baby girl Mathilda rest and enjoy some more sleep. I always allocate up to two hours for newborn photography sessions as I know that anything goes and no one wants to wake a sleeping baby!

Choosing the newborn and motherhood photoshoot location

Emma chose two main spots where she wanted the bond, closeness, and connection between them captured. She opted for their beautiful loungeroom couch and their shower, creating two distinct looks juxtaposing raw moments with cosy warmth.

There are many positives to having a newborn storytelling-style session captured at home. You can have multiple outfit changes in the comfort of your own home, and there's the rawness and convenience of being captured just as YOU are—doing motherhood your way. The baby doesn't need to be moved, put in the car, or feel too unsettled. It's also easier than working with outdoor locations that can pose weather issues that force us to reschedule.

Letting mamma lead the way in her photo session

For me, when I am capturing newborns at home, I don't do wrapping or styling of the baby unless it’s asked for. I let the mamma lead the way, ensuring she shines and radiates in the photos. We work together to make it calm and attuned to the baby's rhythms that day without any sense of rush. My newborn photography sessions always feel collaborative and my guidance is always there.

It was an honour to be invited into Emma's home to photograph such an incredible time in their lives.
